Online Car Auction User Scammed NT$600000: CIB
The victim, surnamed Wang, stumbled upon an appealing advertisement of a second-hand car on a newly-established online car auction Web site costing nearly half of the usual market price.
Wang decided to pay for the used auto after having received copies of the seller’s bank account book, bank card, and a stamp, falling prey to the fraud.
Initially, Wang thought he could withdraw the payment whenever he wanted to, since he had the seller’s banking information at hand. However, it did not occur to him that the suspect had already transferred the money to another account shortly after.
Police said he realized the even was a fraud after having waited for the arrival of the SUV for an unusual length of time.
The police warned the public to be careful with online auctions, highlighting the importance of not buying items that are selling at an unreasonably low price as it is may turn out to be a fraud or a problematic product.
